Grandmaster Suh

Years back (in the 80s) Grandmaster Suh attended our annual Christmas Party – Promotion Dinner. He came each year after I took over the school until around 1988. He always took a moment to speak or share something about his martial arts or life.

In a few moments, he began performing a form – Pal gi Kwon. Everyone was excited and breathless … watching every single move. He finished the opening section and then made about three or four more moves. He suddenly stopped and said “ok, that’s fine for tonight”. I couldn’t believe my eyes! Everyone was saying “no, don’t stop”. It was unbelievable.

He walked slowly back to his chair. Everyone clapped as though he finished the form probably hoping to keep him up there to do so. He sat down and we went on with the demos. Mr. Suh was a very independant man and often, like that night, gave us just enough to draw us forward in our chairs but not enough to actually finish the form. He was like that. It was his off beat sense of humor!

The American School of Martial Arts (Burbank) has been the home of his style for almost 35 years. It will be 35 years in July of 2011. As I mentioned before, that will be party time!!! And, possibly, I will perform at least the first section of Palgi Kwon!

hahaha… that’s funny. I never really thought about it — (that I do it too) until you guys mentioned it here. Very funny. I’m not changing though. 🙂

I agree with B~! I think that’s how we all feel watching you PGMB. I’ve seen you perform Pal gi Kwon no less than 5 times. I’ve seen each section of the form probably a hundred times in class, and I’ve had a year and a half or so of training on that form directly from you, and I never get tired of watching it. No matter how frustrating it can be. Haha!
