“You become what you think. In training, you become what you practice … techniques without a face … simply exposing themselves through you – a human expression.”
(Excerpt from Seeds of a Hermit, by Don Baird: All Rights Reserved – Copyright 1986)
All of the techniques are before us. We can’t see them: but, they are there. Once we surrender ourselves, we become the mediums for the techniques to reveal themselves. In a way, this means to become selfless – to step away from the self and perform the technique for the sake of the technique and not for the expansion of one’s ego or threat to humanity.
The old Shaolin forms are beautiful. They are rich with knowledge and effectiveness. And, they can only be seen when someone learns them. But, they only reach their fullest expression when the student lets go of the self by allowing the technique to be fully embodied and performed. I suppose one could say it’s a zen thing where the student and the technique become one in full harmony. The only way that can happen is for the student to become humble and to allow the technique to shine through without any hint of “I’m doing this great”, “I have so much power”, “People will love seeing me do this” and all the rest of that.
You will become what you think. If you think from ego, you will become more ego. If you let go to the technique, you will become that technique and it will be strong, beautiful, effective and powerful. When the technique becomes that, so will you.
Thank you
You’re welcome. 🙂
