Just Keep Training – It Will Come: Part 2

“A response to a question on a Facebook thread. I thought I would share the info here, with you.”

“It is the scholarly position that I represent. Doing what one believes is one thing; proving it through years of research is another. In that, keep in mind that techniques are not unlike suggestions. There are “three” sides of this coin: 1) technique; 2) its variations; 3) spontaneous creation of an unexpected technique. Most martial arts today remain in coin #1. Some delve a bit into coin #2. But, few understand that the first two coins are the necessary guides to coin #3. This is overly simplified, but I want to make this clear point.

Moving forward. If the student doesn’t understand the theory of technique, he/she will never move beyond either of the first two “coins.” Each technique is not simply a technique, but rather, each one is a representation of theory. If theory is taught correctly, and deeply, the student will walk away with much more than “block and strike.” He/she will walk away with principles; with theory and with greater understanding of what is being done rather than just doing it because it is memorized. Again, many schools never move their training beyond coin #1.”
